Stel je wilt een nieuwswebsite bezoeken of ns.nl, maar je kunt niets lezen of geen treinreis plannen voordat je betaalt. Daar begin je niet aan en gaat op zoek naar het eerste de beste gratis alternatief. Logisch toch. Behalve dat het de normaalste zaak is op de iPhone en Android telefoons. Je betaalt graag enkele euro’s om de Trein applicatie op je telefoon te hebben. Of Tweetie, een betaalde applicatie om gratis te twitteren.
Geld verdienen op het web begint bij mobiel. Daar wil men wel geld betalen voor informatie of diensten. Neem bijvoorbeeld de dienst Spotify (overigens officieel nog niet in Nederland beschikbaar): je betaalt per maand een bedrag om onbeperkt muziek te luisteren uit een grote database. Spotify-gebruikers zijn lovend over de dienst, en betalen er graag voor. Dat is toch een 180 graden draai ten opzichte van alle illegale downloads die er constant plaats vinden op het web.
Apple heeft sinds enkele dagen de betaalmogelijkheden uitgebreid. Er kunnen namelijk nu ook betalingen binnen de apps worden gedaan. Dus je hebt al betaald voor de app (dat hoeft niet altijd) en als je de app wil uitbreiden, bijvoorbeeld een nieuw level van een spelletje, of een plattegrond van de stad waar je aankomend weekend naar toe gaat, dan betaal je daar nog een extra bedrag voor. En alles gaat heel gemakkelijk via het betalingssysteem van Apple. Zonder problemen of obstructies betaal je steeds meer voor digitale (mobiele) content. Overigens komt het Apple waarschijnlijk nog meer ten goede, bovenop de goede resultaten die ze afgelopen kwartaal al hebben geboekt.
In navolging van Apple heeft Paypal een aantal microfinancieringsdiensten gelanceerd. Paypal biedt ook een mobiele betalingsmogelijkheid aan, daarbij hebben ze met dezelfde techniek de oversteek naar het web gemaakt. Ze hebben namelijk een kassa-module ontwikkelt zodat je je eigen webwinkel kan beginnen op bijvoorbeeld Facebook.
Mensen zijn dus wel bereid om te betalen en krijgen daar steeds meer mogelijkheden voor. Het zijn vooral kleine betalingen ook wel micropayments genoemd, kleine winkeltjes, hele gepersonaliseerde digitale producten en diensten waarvoor men geld uit wilt geven.
Als Apple als tussenpersoon dient om dit soort transacties te faciliteren, net als met het aanbieden van de apps in de appstore, dan wordt Apple de “next generation” bank. En wel met een veel gezondere marge dan “old school” banks. 30% is geen slechte marge op het verlenen van een betaalservice, toch?
Creativiteit kent geen grenzen. Wederom briljant.

De Nederlandse (Groot)banken gaan ook echt de strijd verliezen met hun schandalige tarieven. Hoe kan je het volhouden dat je 75ct vraagt voor een betaling (volledig electronisch) via iDeal.
Dat daar geen concurrentie op plaats vindt is pure kartelvorming. Natuurlijk bij grote aantallen kun je contact opnemen met je accountmanager en zal er enige prijsvariatie zijn tussen de banken, maar verder houdt men de prijs kunstmatig hoog.
Geen wonder dus dat global players ook deze markt zullen overnemen. Google Checkout, Amazon micropayments, PayPal (eBay) micropayments, Apple etc.
Het enige dat enigzins in de buurt komt is minitix van de Rabobank, maar daar nog steeds een basis tarief (0,15 + 5%) dat 3x hoger is als bij paypal (0,05 + 5%) en dan kun je bij minitix ook alleen nog maar deelnemen als merchant (webshop) als je klant wordt bij de rabobank, terwijl dat voor de dienst an sich niet nodig is.
Het is dus een kwestie van tijd totdat je overal buitenlandse partijen in dit gat zullen duiken en je iDeal alleen met bijbetaling kunt gebruiken bij webshops.
